DONATIONS FOR HARTLEY COLLEGE LIBRARY FUND

We all know that Hartley College Library was burnt down along with thousands of books and furniture by the Sri Lankan armed forces in 1984.

When the President of the parent body of HCPPA, Mr. Nadarajasundaram, visited Toronto on our invitation, he urged us to take the equipping of Hartley College Library as our priority project. He said that due to the efforts of Past pupils in Sri Lanka, the Library has been re-built; but is bare and needs furniture, books, computer and other modern facilities. He also said that the cost of a book in the range of hundreds of rupees and furniture in the region of thousands of rupees per piece.

HCPPA Canada collected on the spot about Sri Lankan Rs 25,000 and gave him for immediate use. We have also started a fixed deposit fund, in Sri Lanka in the name of Late Mr. K. Ratnasabapathy (retired principal of Hartley College) with an anonymous donation of about Sri Lankan Rs 95,000 to service the Library. We need to enlarge this fund so that we could generate at least about Sri Lankan Rs 100,000 per year so that the Library could be equipped gradually.

I need not to stress the fact that the Library is the Life line of an educational institution. We plan to set aside all our proceeds from our activities this year (Year 2000) towards this fund. I am appealing to every Hartleyite to contribute, what ever they can, towards this fund so that by the end of this year we will be able to have a fixed deposit fund of one million Sri Lankan rupees (CDN $22,000/SR 1,000,000) that we think will generate interest of at least Sri Lankan Rs 100,000 an year.
