Vidvan K. N. Velan (aka Ratnavel)

Vidvan Velan passed away on June 7th at London.

He was a very popular teacher. The students liked him and his Tamil classes.

He was a great orator. He can keep a hundred thousand crowd spell bound. Once when actor Sivaji was in Colombo the crowd was behaving unruly and boisterous. He appeared on the stage and brought normalcy to the gathering.

He was a fan of Kamban and Bharati. His recital of Bharati songs is an extraordinary experience for all the students.

He never used rough language and was kind to every body.

He was an ideal teacher as well as a great philosopher.

It is unfortunate that the Tamil community could have made use of his talent and brought peace in the country as he had some political aspirations. He was unsuccessful in the democratic processes.

His thesis on the Legacy of Yogar Swamy earned him an American Doctorate.

That summarises his aim in life and his transition into a metaphysical world with interests in Hindu religious thoughts.

He leaves a vacuum in the Tamil community.

This great teacher will never leave our hearts and minds.

Regards,
K. W. Baskaran (Sydney, Australia)
