Mr. K. B. Ratnayake, a Hartleyite, and a Former Parliamentary Speaker dies at 80
Former Speaker and veteran politician, K. B. Ratnayake passed away yesterday. He was 80.
Mr. Ratnayake entered Parliament winning a by-election on the SLFP ticket in June 1962. He was elected Speaker of the 10th Parliament on August 25, 1994.
In July 1962, Mr. Ratnayake contested the Anuradhapura by-election as the SLFP candidate.
He was elected at the March 1965 election to the sixth Parliament, he defended his seat, and won with 802 more votes.
His first portfolio was Parliamentary Affairs and Sports. During 1975 to 1977, he was allotted the Transport Ministry in addition to the other portfolios. He was appointed Chief Government Whip from 1971 to 1977.
Ratnayake who was defeated in the 1977 general election returned to Parliament in 1989 from the Anuradhapura district. He received his education at Hartley college, Point Pedro where he captained the cricket team.
An outstanding student, he was a college and hostel prefect.
