Sivapalan at theAGM of 2001. But it was left to the untiring efforts of President Dr. Shan Shanmugavadivel to bring it into focus in the year 2002 and start a campaign to collect funds. . The campaign did not gain momentum probably due to other commitments like HUDEC etc, A request for help for a s was diverted . The effort was renewed this year at the AGM . We are glad to note that more than 40 people committed contribution and quite a number paid on the spot.President Dr. Shanmugavadivel is appealing to USA members to come forward to this worthy cause. We have at the moment an applicant endorsed by the Principal, Hartley, who needs financial help to pursue his studies at the University. We hope this fund will help many needy students most whom have lost either one or two parents. tc \l1 "ADVANCE \d7 RECORD NUMBER OF USA HARTLEYITES AT 15th HARTLEYITES NITE In spite of the many functions on the 29th of November, there was a large gathering of Hartleyites at the 15th Hartleyites Nite with an increasing number of USA members showing up. This includes our chief guest Mr. S. P. Balasingam, himself a USA Life member a devoted Past Pupil, teacher and past Principal of Hartley. Balasingam had to bear the burden of saving Hartley from going into oblivion with college bombed, library burnt and the Sri Lankan Army moving into Hartley and making it impossible to run the College. It was his ingenuity of shifting places and carrying against all odds that made the college survive and come back to its original abode. Mr. Balasingam with his witty after dinner speech made the Hartleyites feel at home. In the midst of his many anecdotes he did not fail to praise the new President Dr. A. Thangarooban as a man very devoted to Hartley and wishing that he will get all the cooperation he needs to carry on the work started by past presidents. An important amendment to the constitution namely that funds collected by of way various activities of the Association should not be spent for any other projects other than for Hartley was passed unanimously. It was also agreed to bring to the notice of Sri Lankan government the hardship experienced by Past pupils and other citizens in visiting the college and asking the authorities to relax the waiting period and the stringent procedure. The following were elected unanimously for the year 2004 and according to the constitution they will assume office from January 2004. President: Dr. A. First of all, I would like to thank all our members especially the members of our exco for your co operation and support during the past 3 years. As I mentioned at the last AGM, a few of you have done very much more than your share to the Association while a very few were not very helpful. Our success is built through teamwork and I congratulate and thank all the new members and members of the new exco for your commitment to work towards shaping the future together. I wish to thank all our friends attached to the other PPAs and HCPPA trust for your co operation and understanding. I sincerely, appreciate the contribution given by Methodists past pupils in arranging joint events. I would also like to express our thanks to Mr S.P. Balasingam, our chief guest at the 15th Hartleyite Nite for making the occasion memorable and enjoyable. A number of important issues have arisen during my term as president. I like to take this opportunity to review some of them. The HCPPA Trust is now a reality. Our Exco has spent several hours in the making of the Trust and finalising the deed. We have collected and remitted a large sum of money towards Library fund, HUDEC fund and Siruval Illam(orphanage) at Thirunelveli. We have started collecting fundsssssss for the very needy University students in memory of late Mr. K. Nadarajah, a former principal. I believe we still have some unfinished tasks, making the HCPPA Trust a registered legal entity and transfer all our funds with Point Pedro PPA and Colombo PPA to HCPPA Trust. Hopefully by the time you receive this newsletter, we would have completed this mission. Finally I encourage all members to come out and participate in all our activities through out the year. I am very pleased Dr. Thangarooban is taking over as the new leader of our organization. Best wishes for the Holiday Season and much happiness in the new year. Dr. Shan A. This project was carried on in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 due to new developments in Vanni we are re-assessing the project . In the meantime due to the efforts of our member Mr. R.Mathavan, we along with our sister school, Methodist Past Pupils launched a project to help the orphanage at Thirunelveli, called Saiva Sirvar Illam. With the kind donations from Hartleyites and Methodist Past Pupils we were able to achieve our target of about $2500 amounting to about SR 170 000. Prof. Shanmugadas and his wife Dr. Shanmugadas came to our Hartleyite Nite and explained to the members the needs of this orphanage. Our President Dr. Shanmugavadivel, handed over the cheque to Prof Shanmugadas on behaf of Hartley and Methodist. Editorial tc \l1 "EditorialADVANCE \d7In the Editorial of the September issue, I highlighted the need for Hartleyites to come forward to swell the Nadaraja fund inaugurated by our President at the AGM of 2002 as there was an urgent need in the post war situation to help deserving students to pursue their studies in the absence of their parents. We are glad to note that there was a good response at this Annual Gathering and we hope that others who did not attend the Hartleyite Nite will send in their contribution for this worthy cause. We should give a big thank you to our president Dr. Shan Shanmugavadivel for leading the HCPPA Canada& USA for the last three years for this was a very crucial period when all branches were trying to organize a common Trust in Colombo to co ordinate the efforts to help Hartley. We are glad that he is giving his unfinished tasks to Dr. A. Thangarooban who has been Vice President for the past three years. We wish the new President and his committee a successful year, 2004. Finally let me thank all the Hartleyites both in Canada and USA for giving me the encouragement to produce this newsletter. Let me conclude by wishing you all, HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
